Apple revamped its TV box last month and declared apps the future of TV. We agree that apps are critical for streaming clients and therefore took a closer look at the competitive situation of streaming clients in Germany.

First of all, we focused on relevant video applications, since we believe they are the main drivers and success factors for these devices. Apple already attracted a fair amount of relevant video apps, coming in 2nd behind Amazon Fire TV. Amazon is the clear leader, providing access to 64% of relevant video apps, while Apple TV only offers access to 50%. The driver for the difference is mainly broadcaster applications, which are mostly not yet available on the Apple TV.

Besides that, gaming could expand the ecosystem and increase the stickiness of the devices by establishing a complementary gaming world (beyond playstation and xbox) mainly focused on casual games.
